On this day in 1889, the South Fork Dam in Johnstown, Pennsylvania collapses, causing a flood that kills more than 2,200 people. The disaster is chronicled in the book, The Terrible Wave, by Marden Dahlstedt. This disaster was one of the American Red Cross's first major relief efforts. Clara Barton arrived five days later to lead the relief. It took five years to rebuild Johnstown, which again endured deadly floods in 1936 and 1977.
A kind of jellyfish upon reaching adulthood can transform itself back to childhood by converting its cells. It may repeat this to live forever.
